The Importance of the
American Physical Therapy Association
The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) is the organizing body for physical therapy in the United States. Our involvement in the APTA allows us to keep our finger on the pulse of the most current and impactful clinical research, the evolution of physical therapy education, healthcare and insurance reform, the inception of increased interprofessional collaboration, and the redefining of our scope of practice as physical therapists.
As students, the APTA keeps us connected with what's going on in the world of physical therapy and apprised of the pertinent issues facing us as future practitioners. As the future leaders of our field, the APTA provides us with a valuable platform from which we can begin to represent physical therapy as a profession, and yields opportunities for involvement in lobbying and research.
Columbia University DPT students are actively involved in the APTA, from participation in national and local conferences to lobbying and research campaigns. Please explore the following links to learn more about the APTA and how we are engaged in this important organization.
